Body Condition Score (BCS) in Dairy Animals

To maintain a healthy body condition, a dairy animal needs to be supplied with nutrients from its diet regularly as per its physical requirements.

However, due to factors like the onset of lactation, pregnancy, or health problems:

  • The adaptation and metabolic changes in the body impair the utilization of nutrients supplied from the daily diet.
  • Additionally, the supply of nutrients may decrease because of a drop in the animal’s appetite.
  • Even if the animal’s hunger is satisfied with enough feed, a light (nutrient-deficient) diet can still cause nutrient shortages compared to the body’s actual demands.

In such situations:

  • The body starts using its internal nutrient reserves to continue ongoing body functions.
  • Malnutrition in the animal can be estimated by observing visible effects on its body condition.

Understanding Body Condition Score (BCS):

According to the formula of modern nutrition management:

  • Animal scientists have developed a system to visually observe the external body of dairy animals at different stages.
  • Based on these observations, they have prepared a standard called ‘Standardized Body Condition Score (BCS)’, graded on a scale of 1 to 5, to estimate the current nutritional status of the animal.

How Livestock Farmers Use BCS:

  • Improved livestock farmers are using BCS to make better decisions about feeding management according to the changing scores of dairy animals at different stages.
  • Although BCS is not based on a specific scientific formula, it is a qualitative assessment based on:

Since observation and experience play a key role, different cowherds might give slightly different scores for the same animal. However, the importance of BCS is steadily increasing in modern livestock farming and is now considered an essential standard in practical animal husbandry.

Practical Method for Scoring:

To use BCS standards practically:

  • The size of the groove on both sides of the animal’s spine and vertebrae,
  • The condition of lumbar bones,
  • The appearance at the base of the tail,
  • The visibility of chest ribs are assessed by pressing these parts with the hand and checking the amount of fatty tissue covering them. Based on the skills and experience of the cowherd, the body weight and condition of the animal are graded between 1 to 5.
